Lamine Yamal, Right winger

From the Rocafonda neighbourhood of Mataró to the Barcelona first team at 15. Yamal is the most exciting young player in world football right now, a left-footed right-winger with Messi-like body shape and Robinho-like dribbling angles.

Training style

Built around La Masia's possession-first method, with a heavy emphasis on protection and pacing. Yamal's training reputation at 17 is for being the calmest player on the training pitch, almost regardless of who he's playing against. The club has deliberately capped his training load.

From first kick to today

The moments and decisions that shaped Yamal’s career.

  1. La Masia entry

Joined La Masia in 2014, plucked from the Mataró youth scene by Barcelona scouts. Same intake as a quiet group of midfielders that has dominated youth tournaments since.

    Key point
Joined La Masia at the standard age. The Barcelona youth pathway in its purest form.
    Interesting fact
Yamal's family lived in the Rocafonda neighbourhood of Mataró, a working-class area with a large Equatorial Guinean and Moroccan community. Yamal has a tattoo of the Rocafonda postcode (08304) on his ankle and wears it as a number celebration after every goal.
    What to copy
Carry where you came from. The Rocafonda postcode is what makes him calm in any stadium.
  2. Barcelona first-team debut

Debut for Barcelona on 30 April 2023 at 15 years 290 days, the youngest first-team player in the club's modern history. Came on as a substitute against Real Betis.

    Key point
Youngest first-team Barcelona player in the modern era.
    Interesting fact
On the day of his debut, his mum Sheila left him a sandwich and a kiss on the kitchen counter before going to work. He ate the sandwich on the team bus to Camp Nou. He has said publicly he will eat one of those sandwiches before every match he plays for the rest of his career.
    What to copy
Tradition is yours to invent. Pick one small ritual that connects you to your family. Repeat it forever.
  3. First senior goal

Scored his first senior goal a few months after his debut. Spain national team called him up immediately, breaking the rule that Spain youth selections must complete their u19 cycle.

    Key point
Spain bent their own selection rules to call him up at 16.
    Interesting fact
Spain's manager Luis de la Fuente phoned the family personally, asked permission from his mother before calling Yamal himself, and offered Sheila a guarantee, that he would never make Yamal play if he was tired. The family agreed on that basis.
    What to copy
When senior football comes calling, the family deal is what protects the player. Make the conditions explicit.
  4. Euro 2024 champion

Scored against France in the semi-final at 16. Lifted the trophy as Spain won. Named Young Player of the Tournament.

    Key point
Youngest player ever to score in a European Championship.
    Interesting fact
On the night of the Euros final, his teammates carried him out of the stadium on their shoulders. He had a school exam scheduled for the day after the parade in Madrid, La Masia would not let him miss it. He did the exam on schedule, in his Spain training kit, the morning after the parade.
    What to copy
Keep the ordinary commitments even when the extraordinary happens. The exam is what keeps you a student, not just an athlete.
  5. Kopa Trophy + Ballon d'Or top 5

Won the 2024 Kopa Trophy as the world's best young player. Finished in the top 5 of the 2024 Ballon d'Or, the youngest male nominee in the award's history.

    Key point
Youngest Ballon d'Or top-5 finisher ever, at 17.
    Interesting fact
He was at school in Mataró when his mother phoned to tell him he had finished fifth in the Ballon d'Or. He went back to class. His teacher told the press: 'He took the news, said thank you, sat down, and asked me to repeat the question I had been asking the class'.
    What to copy
Keep your peer environment ordinary. Your teachers don't care. Your classmates don't care. That's a gift.
