A different kind of weekly training

Most weekly clubs take any child who turns up. They have to, numbers pay the bills. Matico Athletes Club doesn’t.

By trial only

Players invited based on a single trial session. Squads stay small. Standard rises with the room.

FA Level 2 minimum

Every coach holds at least FA Level 2. Performance-phase coaches hold FA Advanced Youth Award.

Real pathway

Three phases by developmental stage. Term-by-term progression review. Movement is based on coach assessment of where each player is ready to go next.

Players who want to be here

Every player is in the room because they want to be. The standard rises with the room. Coaching feedback is honest, specific and direct.

Four pillars. Every session. Every player.

Every Athletes Club session is mapped to all four. No drills for the sake of drills.

01

Technical

Ball mastery, first touch, dribbling, passing accuracy. Every session opens with technical work that builds on the previous week.

02

Tactical

Positional awareness, decision-making, attacking and defensive principles, set-piece routines. Live correction during small-sided games.

03

Physical

Age-appropriate conditioning, agility, balance, coordination. Built directly into warm-ups and integrated drills.

04

Mental

Composure under pressure, response to mistakes, resilience, communication on the pitch. Coached explicitly, named, taught and reinforced.

Three phases. One progression.

Players progress through three phases. We assess every term. Movement between phases is based on coach review of where each player is ready to go next.

Phase 1

Foundation

Ages 8–10. Technical fundamentals, fun-led environment, building confidence in possession.

  • Weekly 90-min session
  • Group of 14 max
  • 2 coaches
Phase 2

Development

Ages 10–13. Tactical structure, positional understanding, match-realistic decision making.

  • Weekly 90-min session
  • Group of 12 max
  • 2 coaches
Phase 3

Performance

Ages 13–15. Pre-academy intensity. Physical conditioning, mental resilience, full match analysis.

  • Weekly 90-min session
  • Group of 10 max
  • 2 coaches + GK coach

Ninety minutes that compound

A session isn’t a workout. It’s a piece of a development arc that runs across the term.

1

Warm-up

Dynamic activation, technical-focused ball work, the coach reads the room.

2

Skill block

Skill of the week, layered drills, individual feedback in real time.

3

Game block

Small-sided games applying the skill block, with live coach correction.

4

Debrief

Stretch, takeaways, the one thing to work on this week. Players leave with homework.

Is this the right room for your child?

Saving everyone the trouble, here’s when Athletes Club is right, and when it isn’t.

This is for your child if:

  • They love football and want to train more than once a week
  • They’re committed to weekly attendance through the term
  • They’ve started outgrowing their grassroots club
  • Their parents want measurable, structured development
  • They’re open to direct coaching feedback as well as praise

Other Matico programmes may fit better if:

  • They’d rather casual play over structured coaching
  • Your schedule suits camps better than weekly training
  • They’re still figuring out whether football is their thing
  • They’re entirely new to football (try Holiday Fun Days first)
  • They’d benefit from a softer feedback environment first

“I tried three different academies before Athletes Club. The coaches here actually coach, they don’t just run drills and shout. Eight months in and my son is a measurably different player.”

What parents ask before booking

How does the trial work?

Request a trial via the form. We’ll book your child into a session with their age-group’s phase. After the session the coaches give feedback to you and a recommendation. No pressure to join. No payment unless you decide to commit.

What if my child doesn’t fit any of the phases?

Phases are based on developmental stage as well as age. After the trial, our coaches recommend the right phase. If another setup would fit your child better, we’ll tell you honestly, and suggest where to go instead.

Can I cancel?

Yes, rolling monthly direct debit, cancel any time with 30 days’ notice. No tie-in.

Do you do match days?

Phase 2 and 3 squads play in regional invitational fixtures most months. Phase 1 doesn’t, the focus is training, not competing.

Where are sessions held?

Sessions run at our partner schools across the South East. We assign a venue based on age group and where you’re travelling from. Venue confirmed before trial.

What if my child is also at a club academy?

Many of our players are in pre-academy or development centre setups elsewhere. Athletes Club is designed to complement those, working alongside them. If there’s a clash, we work around it.
